On December 1, 2009, Consumer Law Group Inc. commenced a class action in Quebec against Toshiba alleging a design defect that causes the lamp unit to last significantly less that the 6,000 to 8,000 hours that Toshiba represented. On June 19, 2012, Consumer Law Group Professional Corporation commenced a similar class action in Ontario.
On September 6, 2012, the parties reached a proposed national settlement. A copy of the settlement agreement is available here:

On July 26, 2013 and July 28, 2013, respectively, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Quebec scheduled a joint hearing for the certification/authorization of the action as a class action and approval of the settlement agreement for September 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Osgoode Hall, located at 130 Queen St. West, Toronto, Ontario, in courtroom #6 and at the Montreal Court House located at 1, Notre-Dame St. East, Montreal, Quebec, in courtroom 2.08. The Courts ordered the following notice regarding those joint hearings:

CONSUMER LAW GROUP has launched a Canada-wide class action lawsuit against Toshiba on behalf of individuals who own a 2004 or 2005 model year digital light projection (“DLP”) television.
The class action is based on a design defect that causes the lamp unit to last significantly less that the 6,000 to 8,000 hours that Toshiba represents, sometimes being as low as 300 hours, thereby causing the televisions to fail prematurely and require the purchase of a replacement lamp unit.

The class action lawsuit identifies the group of affected persons as:
o all residents in Canada who own a 2004 or 2005 model year Toshiba Digital Light Projection (“DLP”) television, or any other group to be determined by the Court;
