CONSUMER LAW GROUP is investigating a Canada-wide class action lawsuit against Conopco Inc. (doing business as Unilever) on behalf of individuals who have purchased TRESemmé Naturals hair care products.
The TRESemmé Naturals products involved are the following:
- Nourishing Moisture Shampoo
- Nourishing Moisture Conditioner
- Radiant Volume Shampoo
- Radiant Volume Conditioner
- Vibrantly Smooth Shampoo
- Vibrantly Smooth Conditioner
The class action involves the deceptive, misleading, false and unfair advertising of TRESemmé Naturals products as being completely natural. However, TRESemmé Naturals products are anything but natural, as they are found to contain synthetic ingredients such as: Ammonium Laureth Sulfate, Ammonium Chloride and Propylene Glycol. In fact, some of the synthetic ingredients found in the TRESemmé Naturals products include ingredients that release formaldehyde or even have a high risk of contamination by 1,4 dioxane (a chemical that is likely to be carcinogenic to humans).
The marketing of the TRESemmé Naturals products included prominent wording on the product bottles, their website and in their television advertisements. The word “Naturals” appeared in all of their advertising which would lead a reasonable consumer to believe that the TRESemmé Naturals products only contained natural ingredients.
As a result, consumers were charged a premium price for the purchase of TRESemmé Naturals products compared to similar hair care products that are not labeled “Natural”, thus causing the consumers economic damage.
A class action lawsuit was filed in the United States against Unilever regarding the TRESemmé Naturals products and a $3.25 million cash settlement was reached, including product refunds. Unilever also agreed to discontinue the sale of the TRESemmé Naturals products.
