Lawrence David is an associate lawyer at Consumer Law Group. Lawrence is fluently bilingual in English and French, and is trained in common law and civil law as a result of completing the combined BCL/LLB program at McGill University’s Faculty of Law. Lawrence also holds a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Harvard Law School.
Prior to joining Consumer Law Group, Lawrence worked in several legal and policy positions in various institutions of Canadian federal governance, including the Supreme Court of Canada, the Privy Council Office, Justice Canada, the Senate of Canada, and the House of Commons. In addition to serving as Judicial Law Clerk to the Honourable Justice Rosalie Silberman Abella at the Supreme Court of Canada, Lawrence also completed a clerkship at the Quebec Court of Appeal. In these capacities, Lawrence has contributed to the development and establishment of legal and policy initiatives of significant national importance. Lawrence was also involved in impactful and complex class action litigation instituted against the Government of Canada, including in devising strategies and arguments for comprehensive settlement agreements seeking to remedy intergenerational injustice against Indigenous Peoples.
Lawrence is the author of the first and most comprehensive monograph on the doctrine and practice of stare decisis in the Supreme Court of Canada, entitled: Stare Decisis, The Charter and The Rule of Law in The Supreme Court of Canada (LexisNexis, 2020). He is also the co-author of the Halsbury’s Laws of Canada volume on Civil Damages (2020 edition) with leading expert Dr. Bruce Feldthusen. Lawrence is also a part-time Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Law in several fields, in both the Common Law and Civil Law Sections.
Lawrence has appeared as counsel or co-counsel before the Federal Court of Canada and the Ontario Court of Justice and has drafted or otherwise contributed to successful legal arguments and strategies in litigation before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Quebec Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal.
